Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man
I am reading the book Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man, which is a memoir written by Bill Clegg. Bill Clegg is a cocaine addict, an alcoholic, and a homosexual. I am halfway done with the book so far, and a lot has happend. Bill does crack-cocaine regularly and cannot control his urges to smoke it. He smokes in public restrooms, such as in airports and restaurants. He also does crack with random people that he meets, such asa taxi drivers. The life of a crack-cocaine addict doesn't seem to be a very good life. Bill used to own his own publishing company that he has driven into the ground because of drug abuse. He spends all of his money on cocaine, almost every day he pulls 2,000 dollars out of his bank account to be spent on cocaine. The book shows how drug abuse can destroy relationships, families, jobs and confidence. He knows that he needs help but whenever somone tries to help him he just shuts them down. People in our society need to know that people do care about their drug abuse, but they also need to carry out the rehabilitation process. So far this book seems really interesting.

ReplyDeleteThis book sounds as though it would be very interesting as the book takes you through the life of Bill Clegg. Bill Clegg is just a man who shares very similar problems with many other people. What I found interesting by your post is how Bill knows he needs help, yet he blocks out people once they offer their help. Is there something Bill is waiting for before he gets help, or a certain person in particular he is looking for help from? Drug use in general is a problem, and there are many clinics set up to help people with drug use and an addiction problem. Based on what you said before that Bill takes 2,000 dollars from his bank account everyday, its seems as though Bill would have no problem paying for the help he needs. My question to you is what caused Bill's cocaine and alcohol addiction? Also, is Bill trying to rebel against someone or use the drugs as a way to get away from life? You point out that Bill will do drugs with anyone, yet he won't seek help from anyone who will give it to him. This all just sounds very interesting, and sounds as though the book is a good read.
ReplyDeleteBill doesn't seem to want help from anyone. He isn't looking for attention or help from a certain person. Bill has all of the resources to get help and treatment but simply wont go through with it. Bill did have a problem as a child with urinating, I'm not sure why the author mentioned this in the book, my assumtion is that getting treatment for it was traumatic, which made him not respect his body and starting drinking and using drugs at a young age.
